Eating Vegan in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Of all the places I was visiting, I knew the least about Slovenia. It was mainly a 2 night stopover for me, before I went to Croatia. I had no clue how easy or difficult finding vegan options might be, especially since I was staying with two meat eaters for one of the nights.

To my pleasant surprise, Ljubljana is extremely vegan friendly! In fact, with only two full days in the city, I didn’t even scratch the vegan surface. So without further ado (and in no particular order), here are my favorite vegan options in Ljubljana, Slovenia

1. Organic Garden

While this wasn’t a fully vegan restaurant (it served fish burgers), it was a delicious, fast food style option for those craving a veggie burger. They also have a great vegan hot dog option.

I got the vegan Red Burger with beans and mushrooms. It was so smokey and delicious with this awesome cream sauce on it. The red cabbage and arugula added a great crunch of freshness. My companion also enjoyed her hot dog.

They serve salads and purple chips as well, but I couldn’t eat anything else after this massive burger. If you need somewhere quick and inexpensive while exploring the city, I recommend this place!

2. Abi Falafel

This place was recommended to me by a tour guide who said they have the best falafel she’s ever had. I think I have to agree with her. The restaurant is always packed with young people, and Slovenian students get a discount.

I ordered the Falafel Special, which was basically a gigantic plate of falafel with hummus, potatoes, and salad. I ate this entire thing and then couldn’t move for the next 3 hours. The falafel was perfectly crunchy, and the potatoes had a great spice on them. I paid around $7 for the entire plate, which isn’t too bad considering the higher prices found in the city.

I recommend this place to someone who is really hungry, and wants a good bang for their buck. It was a great lunch to have after a long morning of exploring.

3. Marley and Me

This restaurant is awesome because it has something for everybody. I was with a meat eater and a vegetarian for the night, so we needed to please each diet. While there are only a few vegan options on the menu, my dish was very tasty and satisfying.

Marley and Me is an Italian style restaurant. The menu is comprised of lots of pasta dishes and meat. I ordered the whole grain penne rigate with spinach, almonds, tomatoes, and broccoli.

I highly recommend this place if you are traveling with non-vegans and picky eaters.

4. Loving Hut

When in doubt, find a Loving Hut. These all vegan buffets are scattered across Europe, making eating fully vegan easier than ever. The food is always different (Asian, Indian, Italian, American, etc.) but it’s usually pretty good. You pay per pound, meaning you only pay for what you want.

I ate here because I needed something quick before my bus to Croatia arrived. It’s situated right across the street from the bus station, so the location is prime.

This is all the delicious vegan food I ate while traveling in Ljubljana (give or take a few paprika Pringles)! I will definitely be going back so that I can try all the other amazing restaurants.
